I developed a passion for living the outdoors lifestyle growing up in a small suburban town in Rhode Island. While most of my friends wore clothes from Xpress, I wore hiking boots from EMS and a hand-me-down LL Bean coat. I was known as Mountain Kait.
After high school I found my way to Colorado to pursue my dreams of teaching high school, coaching tennis, skiing big mountains, racing mountain bikes and running marathons. I spent six years on the Front Range of Colorado doing all those and more.
But I yearned for change and new challenges, so in June 2011 I took a leave of absence from my teaching job and accepted a graduate position at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. I’m currently working on research projects in environmental justice and conservation policy. I can’t think of a better way to combine my passion for the outdoors with my love of politics.
When not working on academic projects, I spend my time mountain biking and skiing in Wyoming and Colorado, and on the days that I can’t get to the mountains, I’m training for marathons next spring and summer. And of course, my dog Mikaya does it all with me!
Living a healthy, active lifestyle is not as difficult as it may seem. Many people ask how I do it, and I love nothing more than to share my knowledge and experience with them—to educate and teach. That’s what I do best.
I want to not only share my adventures and love of the outdoors here on this blog, but also to share ways to incorporate fitness and nutrition into our everyday lives. It’s not just about exercise: it’s about eating right, finding balance, and keeping stress low. The power of the mind and body are extraordinary. Just when we think we can’t, we can.
So I invite you to follow my journey, my adventures, and the challenges that I face with hopes that I can help you discover how to achieve a more active and healthy lifestyle and truly enjoy life!
I’m glad your suburban roots and EMS boots brought you to where you are today. Pretty excited about following your blog Mountain Kait…..
Jon wants your next blog to be from Kit Kat. Haha.
Mountain Kait,
thank you for your interest in our little straw bale hotel and helping me get more exercise outdoors.
We’ll keep reading your blog.
Greetings from Switzerland
Louis

Yay, a Colorado follower! Thanks so much for following, your story seems fun! I absolutely love Colorado, and I don’t know how you could live in Wyoming now…but at least you’re pretty close to colorado!
I loved Colorado too for a while, but now that I am in Wyoming, I realize this is what I was looking for. Bigger mountains and less people. I had a really hard time with the traffic of the Front Range after a while.
Good choice!
AMEN! I hate all of the negative attitudes towards Wyoming from Denver-ites!
Just saw you are living in Wyoming and had to let you know I grew up in Casper, Wy and have spent many a days in Laramie! I hope to see lots more on your blog, I love it!

That’s so cool that you live in Laramie!!! I lived there from ages 5-22 and it was the best place ever. My folks still live there, so maybe I’ll see you one of these days!

Hey Kait, Just found your blog via the #runchat site for running blogs site. I’m pretty similar to you in that I grew up in a small New England town and darted for the Rocky Mtn area as soon as college rolled around. I currently live in Virginia for grad school, but miss Laramie everyday! Enjoy it!!
Hey! So glad that you found me. Did you come to UW at some point?
